HOW HIV IS NOT SPREAD

* HIV is not spread through everyday casual contact (shaking hand, sharing toilet, using the same phone, eating the same food…)

* ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND HIV

Drinking alcohol or taking drugs may impair people judgment. This may lead people to do things that increase HIV risk such as:

·         Having sex without using a latex condom correctly

·         Sharing needles, razor blades or syringes

STOPPING THE SPREAD OF HIV

 ABC rules:

A: abstinence : People can choose not to have sex

B: be faithful

C: Condoms use. If people have sex, using latex condoms the right way every time greatly reduces the risk of HIV infection and other STDs

People can choose ways to be affectionate that do not spread HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): respect each other, have fun.

HIV TESTING

People who think they are at risk of HIV are encouraged to seek individual counseling and testing.

An HIV test is the only way to tell whether or not someone has HIV. When someone has HIV, it is helpful for the person to learn as soon as possible to protect their health and to avoid spreading the virus to others.

Do not donate blood to get tested for HIV

BLOOD SUPPLY

The risk of receiving an HIV contaminated blood transfusion in the U.S. is extremely low.

·         All blood donors are interviewed for risks of HIV.

·         All donated blood is tested for signs of HIV.

·         All blood is destroyed if tests detect signs of HIV.

Remember

“IT’S NOT WHO YOU ARE, BUT WHAT YOUR ARE DOING THAT PUT YOU AT RISK AGAINST HIV”
