Youth Taking Control Program (YTC)
The Youth Taking Control (YTC) program is specifically designed for our youths/kids to create an open and comfortable relationship with their parent (s) or guardian(s).
The YTC goals are to
- Give voice and leadership roles to our youths
- Empowers youths to make social changes in their community through educational, recreational, entrepreneurial, and art opportunities.
Most of the interventions in this program are done in partnership with other collaborative agencies.
Who can benefit from this program
- Youths under 24 years of age
- Youths who are born from African descent
- Youths who are on medical assistance or Minnesota care
The program activities include
- Education
- Child and teen checkups
- After school activities
- Holidays and summer activities.
The education provided empowers youths and kids for building healthy behavior primarily through the sharing of age appropriate information around the topic of
- Preventable health issues affecting African immigrants in Minnesota
- 101 financial management for youths
- Time management
- Leadership
- Importance of volunteering
- Africa art and history
Child and Teen check-up includes
- Health information and evaluation
- Height and weight check
- Physical exam
- Hearing and vision screening
- Development and mental screening
- Lab test and lead test
- Referral to the dentist or special care
- Diet information
- Immunization
After school activities are mentoring intervention helping youths develop needed skills. Holidays and summer activities are tied around some of our special events.
